Premade frozen spinach cubes are a super easy way to add nutrient density to your morning green smoothies.
You can use raw spinach, or cook it first. Just make sure that you use ORGANIC SPINACH. The Environmental Working Group reports spinach as one of the dozen most heavily pesticide-contaminated produce products.
Spinach is an incredibly nutrient rich food. It contains high concentrations of health-promoting antioxidant phytonutrients such as carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) and flavonoids. Spinach is high in vitamin K, vitamin A (and especially high in lutein), vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, manganese, folate, betaine, iron, vitamin B2, calcium, potassium, vitamin B6, folic acid, copper, protein, phosphorus, zinc, niacin, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.
Make sure you add some healthy fats to your meal if you consume spinach. Use butter, ghee, coconut oil, or lard on your cooked spinach to aid in the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins and minerals — vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin E as well as calcium. You can add a spoonful of coconut oil to your morning smoothie or use a nut or seed butter to add healthy fats.
How to Make Frozen Spinach Cubes
It is very easy to make frozen spinach cubes for your healthy shakes in the morning. All you need is a large blender or food processor and some silicone ice cube trays. The silicone trays are the best to use, because after freezing the spinach cubes just pop out easily. Just fill your blender or food processor with raw organic spinach, and puree until smooth. Fill your silicone ice cube trays with the pureed spinach. Freeze for 3-4 hours, or until hard enough to remove the cubes from the ice cube tray. Pop them out and store in a plastic bag in the freezer. To use, just add one or two frozen cubes to your smoothie prior to blending.
